The autumn season is a time of change. The leaves change color, the air gets cooler, and our bodies start to prepare for the winter months. Unfortunately, for many people, autumn also brings an increase in joint pain. Dr. Jeff Hall here at Chattanooga Non-surgical Orthopedics explains some reasons why this happens and what can be done about it.

Why does joint pain increase in the autumn?

There are a few reasons why joint pain may increase in the autumn. One reason is the change in temperature. As the weather gets colder, the synovial fluid in our joints thickens. This can make it more difficult for our joints to move and can lead to pain and stiffness.

Another reason why joint pain may increase in the autumn is the decrease in sunlight exposure. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health. When we don’t get enough sunlight, our vitamin D levels can drop, which can lead to weaker bones and an increased risk of joint pain.

Finally, many people tend to be less active during the autumn and winter months. This is due to a number of factors, such as the colder weather, shorter days, and holiday season. However, inactivity can lead to muscle weakness, which can put additional stress on our joints and contribute to joint pain.

Statistics on joint pain

Joint pain is a common problem, affecting millions of people around the world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 25.3% of US adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, the most common cause of joint pain.

Joint pain is more common in older adults, but it can affect people of all ages. Women are also more likely to experience joint pain than men.

How to manage joint pain in the autumn

There are a number of things you can do to manage joint pain in the autumn, including:

  • Stay active. Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your joints. It helps to strengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility, both of which can help to reduce joint pain. Low-impact exercises, such as swimming, walking, and biking, are ideal for people with joint pain.
  • Dress warmly when it’s cold. Cold weather can make joint pain worse, so it’s important to dress warmly when you’re going to be outside. Wear layers of clothing that you can easily remove as needed.
  • Get enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone health and can help to reduce joint pain. You can get vitamin D from sunlight, food, and supplements. If you’re not getting enough vitamin D from sunlight, talk to your doctor about taking a supplement.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight puts additional stress on your joints, which can lead to joint pain. Losing weight can help to reduce joint pain and improve your overall health.

If you’re experiencing joint pain in the autumn, talk to Dr. Hall. There are a number of treatments available that can help to reduce pain and improve function.
