Distance Learning Requires More Focus on Nutrition

One of the few things that has been consistent in 2020 is the fact that it is a year like no other.  When schools closed, distance learning and homeschooling became the norm rather than the exception. But learning from home can present some health challenges all on their own.

For many students, the new norm involves sitting, staring at a screen for much of the day, and snacking away the boredom. It often requires more focus and concentration than in the classroom setting. One of the first things to keep an eye on is nutrition.  The food we eat is what fuels the body to do all of the functions needed to live and to perform activities we enjoy.  A nutritious diet is important to provide the variety of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that our body uses.

Here at Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center, we care about nutrition as much as we do about exercise, joint health, relieving back pain, and knee pain. Here are some tips to help the home learner stay on top of it all:

  • A balanced breakfast with energy producing carbs and fiber start the day while healthy protein feeds the brain for learning.
  • Healthy snacks that include protein prevent a sugar crash that often follows sugary snacks- which you should avoid.
  • Include some vegetables at lunchtime and choose fruit over candy to help the sweet cravings.
  • Stay hydrated. Water is the best beverage hands down. Soft drinks are the worst. Using fruit or fresh herbs to flavor the water are a good alternative.

Much more could be said about staying healthy while working and schooling from home, but these nutritional tips should help you on your way to better, more focused concentration!
