Fitness in 2021 May Look Quite Different

About this time of year many predictions for the fitness trends that may emerge in the forthcoming year are projected by bloggers and fitness experts around the world- but this year is different.

As we all raised a glass to welcome 2020, none of us could have ever predicted how much our lives would change come the end of March and continuing through the end of the year. Mask wearing, social distancing, curfews, lockdowns, and restrictions have all become the norm. For the foreseeable future this is how we must live our lives. In previous years, fitness trends have been a lot more fad-oriented, with unusual twists on basic fitness principles and group classes geared towards fun and sociability. 2021 however will be focused much more on practical solutions to help get people fit and healthy- in a safe way. And there are two big trends that are clearly paving the way in terms of how fitness is bound to look in 2021… more much more outdoor exercise and the relative newby- online fitness!

Outdoor Fitness

We’ve been exercising outdoors forever, so what’s different? 2020 embraced outdoor fitness more vigorously as a safer alternative to the gym and as a way to not only keep fit but to also help our mental health. And with so many working from home, it’s a lot easier to head out for a run or a bike ride at times because there’s no longer the commute eating up precious minutes from our day.

The fitness industry has adapted to life in lockdown and so too have we. Fresh air and nature play an essential role in this and we should expect many more outdoor routines, outdoor adventure fitness camps, and outdoor everything in 2021.

Online Fitness

Online workouts have begun providing people with not only fitness, but structure, a sense of community, and a chance to socialize, albeit virtually. Whether it’s scheduled Zoom calls with friends, Facebook live sessions with your fitness class or pre-recorded YouTube video workouts, we’ve all managed to adapt the way we exercise for the current situation.

While not an ideal solution, many of us are discovering that we’re a lot better at working out at home than we thought. In fact we’ve discovered that exercising at home:

  • Is more convenient
  • Saves time without traveling to the gym
  • Means you can wear what you want without onlookers
  • Saves money on gym membership or class fees
  • Offers more variety

2021 will be the year we come up with unique solutions to our fitness needs. Bodyweight exercises will be crucial for this, things like squats, knee raises, sit ups etc. all require very little space and zero equipment.

Before the current COVID crisis, many of us would have shied away from video link-ups and live streaming, but our lives have changed so much and we’ve all become a lot more technologically adept, and so this way of working out has, and will become completely normal to us. Look for 2021 to be a ramp-up of everything outdoor and online when it comes to fitness!
